From January to May 2024, Chinese ports managed a container throughput of 132.8 million TEUs, signifying an 8.8% year-on-year growth.
In the same timeframe, Shanghai Port’s container throughput attained 20.9 million TEUs, reflecting an 8.6% year-on-year rise, whereas Ningbo Zhoushan Port processed 15.8 million TEUs, marking a 6.5% year-on-year increase.
Beibu Gulf experienced the highest surge in container throughput from January to May, soaring by an impressive 19.1% year-on-year, indicating significant growth. Shenzhen followed with a robust 15.8% increase, reflecting vigorous activity in this major port city. Shanghai saw a moderate rise of 6.6%, maintaining its stature as a leading port with steady growth. Ningbo Zhoushan also demonstrated solid growth at 9.3%, reinforcing its status as a key port handling substantial container traffic.
Conversely, Qingdao experienced a decline of 7.3% in May compared to the previous year, indicating a decrease in container throughput for that specific month. Xiamen also saw a reduction of 5.3% in May year-on-year, reflecting a downturn in container handling during that period.
Overall, while most ports exhibited growth in container throughput from January to May, Qingdao and Xiamen faced challenges with reduced throughput specifically in May.
